ABSTRACT
United Kingdom’(185). Preparation for pupils to be able ‘to take their place in society as
responsible citizens’ (Department for Education 2013, 185) cannot simply be based on
the accumulation of text-book or web-based knowledge, with or without other classroom
activities, but necessitates an understanding of processes and experiences. Therefore,
while the relationship between the citizenship curriculum and active participation might
not be as overt as in the past, that relationship certainly remains.
