ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in subsequent chapters of this book. The overarching aim of the book is to exemplify just a few of the myriad ways in which research and teaching are inextricably bound up with one another and hence the value of ensuring that both are accorded due attention by all those who profess a concern with reading. The author work with student teachers and practising English teachers, all of whom are keen to develop their pedagogy through research. In many educational institutions across the world there is currently undue emphasis on management and accountability, without a concomitant focus on teaching and learning itself. The author always felt that if students become involved in any research, the process should be of value to them as well as to the researcher, whether the students are co-researchers or participants. He also work with students undertaking higher degrees with a particular interest in reading.
