ABSTRACT

The chapter begins with the claim that there has recently been a ‘third wave’ in mainstream global justice theorizing, and we consider the claim put forward by Gabriel Wollner with respect to the thinkers he uses to exemplify his argument. We then turn to two popular philosophical traditions – republicanism and recognition theory – that have challenged the liberal orthodoxy for some time in the field of political theory and have more recently been deployed with the same intent in the global justice debate. The next section then outlines a contribution to the debate from a philosophical figure, Iris Marion Young, who before her untimely death was always at the critical margins of the mainstream political theory and, in the context of the global justice debate, raises some difficult questions about the predominant individualistic outlook – while also making a significant link with the activist perspective.
