ABSTRACT

This chapter takes an even broader view of the assessment center (AC) method. It also considers the social impact of AC practices and how AC operations have contributed to positive social change. The chapter evaluates ACs as they serve various talent management (TM) functions with an eye toward these more pluralistic, socially conscious, and humanistic values. It by considering the role of assessment centers in promoting workplace justice and fairness, as seen through the eyes of those impacted by assessment center operations. A valuable tool to counter reactions to unfavorable outcomes is via procedural and interpersonal fairness. It also explores the extent to which AC ratings show subgroup differences, as well as the ways in which ACs have been challenged and defended legally. Finally the chapter conclude with case studies from around the world, where assessment centers have been used in efforts to impart positive social change.
