ABSTRACT

Although Aly’s current vocation is primarily in the academic sector as an assistant professor in UNC-Charlotte’s Theater Department, she has worked (and continues to work) in a wide variety of other costume-related areas. As a professional costume designer, she has created apparel for both theater and academia, in addition to working in other aspects of the field. “Before [I came to UNC-Charlotte], I worked as the resident costume and make-up designer at the College of Dupage outside Chicago for 15 years. I freelance in Chicago and other regional theaters. I am an ensemble member at Strawdog Theatre and Lifeline Theatre in Chicago. I am a founding member of WildClaw Theatre where I also served as the artistic director for three years. I am also a playwright too. Lifeline [Theatre in Chicago] focuses on adaptations of books to the stage. My favorite project there was the costumes for Watership Down. We based the main characters on Seattle street kids. Each new warren they encountered had a very distinct style: Cowslip warren were sort of beatniks, Efrafra was very rigid and militarized, and the box rabbits were very preppy, bright, and perky in style.
