ABSTRACT

The period 1952-75 has witnessed the most far-reaching transformation in Egypt's economy and society. In spite of the fact that a few countries, such as Kuwait, have seen immense economic and social change over the same period, Egypt's case, like that of only one other Arab country - Algeria - is specially noteworthy in the sense that the change has not only been considerable, but it has also occurred on several fronts: from the technological and economic to the social and political. It has been qualitative on each of these fronts, not merely quantitative. This is true in spite of some major political setbacks that have seriously slowed down the pace of progress.
