ABSTRACT

Represented speech and thought is now characterizable as a representa tion of expression without this in any way implying a representation of communication. This is the inevitable conclusion of a position which argues that Es with a third person SELF cannot also contain a SPEAKER. A first person is not, however, excluded from all represented Es — as long as it is coreferential with the SELF it may appear. Should such represented Es then be considered Es of communication?
