ABSTRACT
This chapter will examine the testimony of those Germans who settled in Africa during the colonial era. The memoir and the autobiography are fertile sources of information about the colonies, and in many ways they are more informative about the realities of colonial life than more overt colonialist propaganda. While many of the works analysed in previous chapters are also autobiographical in that they are first-person accounts of journeys and political activities in German potential or settled colonies, their anthropological and political content overshadows personal testimony. This chapter analyses discourse in which personal experience forms the main topic of the narrative, its chief purpose being to present a realistic picture of colonial life.
