ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the key features of the current system that can be redefined to become more inclusive of the players entrenched in the prison setting. The redefinition of expert knowledge as lived realities is key in the weakening of programs like 'Pathway to Change'. The chapter then explains these newly redefined concepts to argue for a collaborative model of recidivism reduction, which involves shifting the focus of sole responsibility and blame from the inmates and repositioning it. The onus of accountability is more equally shared among everyone involved in the processes of justice, including the inmates, the state, policy makers, corrections professionals and the public at large. Finally, the chapter concludes with some suggestions for the next steps researchers and practitioners that continue the critical evaluation of these programs and hopes for the future of this field of inquiry and the sociology of prisons in general.
