ABSTRACT

THE Mendip Hills consist mainly o f a ridge o f Carboniferous limestone with sandstone outcrops, extending from Brean Down in the west to the hills north of Shepton Mallet in the east, with outliers almost as far as Frome. Their situation, extending from the Bristol Channel to a point within sight o f the Wiltshire Downs, explains their importance as a connecting link between Wessex and the West country.
