ABSTRACT

Acceptance of this interpretation carries with it the valuable corollary that evidence for the dating of the internal thickening of the fort wall can be applied to the city wall proper. It is not necessary here to review the various theories that have been advanced for the date of the Roman wall. Suffice it to say that the evidence that has accumulated since the position was reviewed in 19271 has tended to move this event ever further from the time of the first foundation of the city. In 1935, Mr. Cottrill was able to show from his observations on Tower Hill that the wall there could not have been built before a .d . 1 2 0 —3 0 , the significant discovery being a fragment of Samian pottery of that date which came from beneath the internal bank which is of the same date as the wall.2 Assuming the relationship already stated between the internal addition
