ABSTRACT

HPHE orderly improvement and evolution of tools and weapons ^ makes it possible to divide the bronzes found stray or in

hoards between several chronological groups: each group illustrates the fashions prevailing, and the technical standards achieved, at a distinct period of time. The division is thus of the same kind as the division of English history that can be made on the basis of styles of architecture into Norman, Gothic, Renaissance, and so on. In the British Bronze Age Montelius distinguished five periods, but most authorities are content with a triple division-into Early, Middle, and Late Bronze Ages.
