The First World War book
The First World War (often referred to in Britain as the “Great War”) was a shock to the British. Fought largely in an effort to preserve the status quo in terms of both
Britain’s international position and the domestic political and social order, the war instead significantly altered both. Yet it did not represent a total rupture with the past: Britain was not convulsed by revolution as were some other European countries that fought in the war. Britain’s political system and social structure were forced to bend and adapt, but they did not break.
