ABSTRACT

The substantial village o f Snettisham lies in north-west Norfolk (Fig. 9) close to the northern end o f that narrow strip o f greensand country which, with its open woods o f silver birch and brackencovered heathland, gives much o f its charm to the adjacent royal

estate o f Sandringham. Through this large village runs the main road from King’s Lynn, now the chief port o f west Norfolk (12 miles to the south), to the seaside resort o f Hunstanton (4 miles to the north) (Fig. 9). At the north end o f the village the road rises to surmount the

spur o f Ken Hill, which projects westward towards the Wash and forms a prominent landmark from all directions and especially from the sea.
