ABSTRACT

The Local Chicago civil rights organization founded in 1962. Chicago Freedom Movement: A coalition of organizations that joined together to run the 1965-1966 Chicago Campaign. In 1965, Jesse Jackson took part in the Selma Campaign, and when the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) began to turn its attention to Chicago, he became involved in its activities there. King's first attempt to focus attention on or dramatize the problems of Chicago's slums came when he seized an apartment building at 1321 South Homan, in what he termed a 'supralegal trusteeship' of the building. The Chicago press condemned the seizure of property and Chicago's Cook County Welfare Department withheld its rent subsidy to the tenants. Andrew Young had announced the beginning of SCLC's Chicago Campaign, the organization had precious little to show for its efforts. Events on the ground in Chicago soon overtook the movement's plans. There were many in Chicago who agreed with Local black leader Chester Robinson's sentiments.
