ABSTRACT

During the first half of 1964, King and the SCLC focused on another community-based campaign in St Augustine, Florida, America's oldest city. They hoped that as the tourist-oriented city geared up for its quadricentennial celebrations in 1965, demonstrations would place pressure on local businessmen to act to avoid negative headlines. The campaign also sought to persuade Congress to pass the 1964 Civil Rights Act that President Kennedy had introduced as a bill the year before. Neither goal was successful. On the ground in St Augustine the campaign produced few tangible results. Its impact on Congress was negligible.
