ABSTRACT

In recent years investigators have studied the unusual and confusing environment parents of a premature infant encounter as they try to meet the needs of their sleepy, fragile and unpredictable infant. Observations based on recently completed studies suggest a number of promising interventions that may reduce parental anxiety and stress, and which deserve further study on the traditional hospital environment. This chapter will integrate these investigations in an attempt to develop new and more positive environments for both parents and infants.
