ABSTRACT
If the baby needs to go to the NNU, the parents should be allowed to see him if it is at all possible before he leaves the labour ward, and the nurse or the paediatrician should explain to the them the transport incubator and any other equipment being used; they must emphasise, even at that stage, that parents will always be very welcome on the NNU. Although some fathers will wish to stay with their wives for some time in this situation, others may wish to, and should be allowed to, accompany their baby and the paediatric team to the NNU.
