ABSTRACT

Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT) is an educational approach to psychotherapy. Applying sound principles to facilitate learning is a key issue in the practice of REBT. The first principle is the need for suitable pacing. Effective REBT therapists not only teach rational principles effectively, but also ensure that their clients learn rational principles thoroughly. Particularly when the therapist is employing a didactic style of REBT, he needs to check out what his clients are learning from his didactic teachings. This does not mean that when the therapist is working more Socratically, he can forgo this point even though the Socratic dialogue involves the therapist giving feedback to clients when they provide answers which demonstrate an inadequate grasp of these rational principles. It is important to use a wide range of bibliotherapy material. Practitioners of REBT educate clients in healthy rational principles.
