ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book argues about slums and informal settlements are themselves both part of the problem and part of the solution to the housing problem. It considers some common myths often associated with urban informality. It uses the terms 'formality' and 'informality' along with some other terms that is been controversial among scholars and specialists. The book constructs an argument and a framework for thinking about low-cost housing that focuses on its role in social justice. The title of the book derives from this fundamental premise. Worldwide, the informal sector produces millions of innovative, highly adaptable and culturally sensitive housing solutions. The book is based on the belief that architects and urban specialists have a crucial role to play in housing and social justice.
