ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the nature of economic development as a profession and the ways in which practices are shaped by global markets, as well as local regulations and programs. It examines the ways in which the practice of economic development exhibits both similarities and differences across nations and how places can learn from each other. The chapter discusses where employment opportunities lie for economic development professionals and the resources and opportunities available to practitioners to develop their careers and stay abreast of progress in the field. It explains the professional associations available to economic developers and the role they play in advocating for change and documents information sources on employment opportunities. Research undertaken in Europe has shown that economic developers are more effective, and more highly regarded by their colleagues, if they establish and maintain a network, both within their profession and in related areas of their working life.
