Introduction

One of the key characteristics of life in the twenty-rst century is the importance of political and economic relationships both within and between states. Governments and citizens are increasingly aected by structures and processes beyond their immediate locality and control. These changes in the nature of world politics can initially appear overwhelmingly incomprehensible. Such phenomena are at the heart of contemporary debates within the discipline of International Political Economy (IPE).
