ABSTRACT

Drink is often one symptom or condition among wider personality and behavioral issues which themselves are a manifestation of deep-seated habits and traits. The behavior is normalized and alcohol misuse in many contexts is considered normal alcohol use. In some subcultures, and at certain times, bad behavior as a result of intoxication is par for the course. The World Health Organization (WHO) sees the prevention and treatment of alcoholism and alcohol misuse as a key priority. According to Pickard, personality disorder (PD) is at the extreme end of a continuum of normal personality. It is the extremity of the characteristic rather than the characteristic per se that signifies disorder. Chronic addiction is often associated with other psychiatric conditions such as depression, panic disorder and phobia. Gogarty and Williamson provide an interesting analysis of the similar nature and source of some of these factors or demons'.
