ABSTRACT

The concept of ideology occupies a crucial place in many of the theoretical frameworks utilised in intellectual disciplines ranging from sociology to literary criticism. In particular, of course, the concept is important to the intellectual traditions of Marxism and more recently, Critical Theory. In the latter indeed the project of ideologiekritik is an essential armature of both the ethical and epistemological aspects of its critical stance: and the concept of ideology is therefore a vital part of the moral and intellectual ground from which Critical Theory’s critique is launched.
