ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book focuses on childcare and education professionals who wish to lead drama sessions with children aged three to five. They are equally suitable for use in a day nursery, pre-school, children's centre or childminding setting, or in a nursery or reception class in a state or independent school. Opportunities for drama and imaginative role play have never been more vital to the learning and development of children up to the age of five. Dramatic and imaginative play can be stimulating and responsive, adapting to each child's feelings and interests and encouraging both adult-led and child-initiated ideas, while fostering independence and positive relationships. Children may use drama to satisfy their curiosity; use their senses; develop interests; pretend that objects are other things; or take on roles and act out experiences, alone and with others.
