ABSTRACT

Children need to be able to communicate with others without frustration, to enjoy creating and developing their own ideas and to understand and participate within any project as a member of a group. Clear speech and good language skills are an asset and acquiring, developing and practising them can be fun. This chapter discusses the achievement of the early learning goals within the prime area of Communication and Language. When we all speak together at the same time it is called speaking in unison. Listen carefully to children's spontaneous speech and make appropriate comments and replies. Children who have English as an additional language can benefit from all drama activities, but will particularly increase their understanding and use of the language through listening to stories, chanting rhymes, singing songs and matching mimes and actions to words.
