ABSTRACT

The awning at my neighborhood greengrocer reads: “Open 24 hours. Golden Farms International Grocery. Russian, Ukrainian, Polish, Israeli, Turkish. Kosher. Organic. Gourmet Foods.” The owner is Chinese. The cashiers and stock clerks are Mexican. My neighborhood is called Kensington, and it is in Brooklyn, New York City. Many have the impression that 24-hour cities are all about bright-lights downtowns, office skyscrapers, and high-end condomin - iums – a city for the elite. But, nestled within the vibrant 24-hour cities are small communities like mine: connected to the core, but amazingly vital in their own right.
