ABSTRACT

In this chapter, author unpacks the "pedagogy of heart and mind" that undergirds her work at B-Club. Uniting sociocultural theories of learning with the philosophy and scholarship of such diverse thinkers as Paulo Freire, Lev Vygotsky, bell hooks, Antoine de Saint Exupery, and Thicht Naht Hahn, she cross reified borders between thought and emotion, intellect and spirit, heart and mind. In this chapter she unpacks key theoretical constructs that they struggled with in class, and consider how undergraduates and the research and instructional team brought these to life in the club. Sociocultural theory holds that human beings learn best through their engagement in meaningful activities, driven by authentic purposes and goals, and supported in their learning through the use of cultural tools and social relationships. It is true to a sociocultural model of development that looks for potential and then creates conditions to nurture it.
