ABSTRACT

This chapter builds from the discussion of author's pedagogical approach. Reframing engagement as animation, she look at where, when and how kids "lit up" as they engaged in activities at B-Club. This invariably happened when kids had opportunities to express and reveal their connections to people and places that are scattered across the globe. This chapter explores those connections, forcing consideration of the meanings of the very real geopolitical borders that shape these children's lives and their experiences of crossing and not crossing them. The variety of connections kids had to places around the world, as well as the ones to which they aspired to visit, was evident in their responses to a written survey they administered at B-Club. For young children in new immigrant communities, nation states and brand name tourist attractions may seem comparable in terms of their attraction and accessibility.
