ABSTRACT

This chapter presents story writing ideas to engage child authors and enrich professional practices. Child authors can mark make/write the most wonderful emerging story that can be 'wrapped up' in a beautifully self-designed front cover, but if the story title does not grab the reader's attention then they are unlikely to want to read it. Support child authors in making a Halloween mask. Challenge child authors to make explosive sounds with musical instruments in the outdoor play area, mimicking them with their voices and describing the sounds that they make. Famous authors such as Michael Morpurgo, Margaret Atwood, Philip Pullman, Roddy Doyle and P. D. James were asked to list their rules for writing fiction as inspired by Leonard's 10 Rules of Writing. Many child authors will be familiar with Mr. Potato Head, the American toy that appeared as an animated character in the Toy Story films.
