ABSTRACT
This chapter explains how to Create characters. A primary source of 'character' for young child authors is human beings. The foundation stage was, the child authors to create a distinctive 'look' for their lead human character by looking at illustrations in picture books, clothing magazines or via safe internet image searches. First decisions that child authors need to make is not just who is going to be in their story but what names they are going to give their characters, especially the lead protagonist. Encourage child authors to orally decide on character names that have personal meaning to them. Help child authors to appreciate how character's names can be based on. Ask a child author to talk about one of their own made-up stories that involves characters from different cultures and they might struggle. The abundance of children's stories with animals as central characters, this is clearly evident when one thinks of traditional tales.
