ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the history, key components and theoretical framework for development education. It also outlines the examples of practice through lenses of development, globalisation and the activities of international Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs). The chapter aims to present other examples of good practice in development education that reflects the aspirations. Themes such as global poverty, social justice and global citizenship could be argued to be appropriate only for approaches to learning with upper primary or secondary school children. Open Space for Dialogue and Enquiry Methodology (OSDE) is influenced by the thinking of Freire, critical literacy and postcolonialism. Its main focus is to create learning spaces where participants can engage critically with a range of global issues and perspectives. Following a similar model to OSDE, Through Other Eyes (TOE) identifies themes on which the learner goes through a process of reflection, a learning journey, looking at different perspectives and reflections.
