ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts discussed in this book. The book suggests that the discourses and practices in development education can make an important contribution. Development education and its related themes, whilst not always central to mainstream educational practice, have clearly had influence in many industrialised countries. The pedagogy of development education and its application through global learning need further debate and discussion. It needs to have a clear knowledge base that is located within discourses around international development. Global learning needs to be relevant to the curriculum. It needs to recognise the importance of critical thinking. A belief in social justice should have a prominent role. It needs above all not to be seen as the simple application of a specific series of topics, but rather as an approach to learning that necessitates reflection on the part of the educator and the learner.
