ABSTRACT
This chapter examines the relationship between family and child, more specifically about the parent's involvement in their child's education. The home-school connection is important to student literacy achievement. However, it can be time-consuming to develop and implement programming that keeps families engaged and involved. Empowering Families makes it easier to accomplish these goals. This can be achieved by taking step-by-step plans for arranging a variety of parent/caregiver meetings and literacy booster events. Parents should help their children avoid homework hassles. They should encourage male involvement in literacy. They should read aloud to their children at home. Parents should minimize the summer slide. Families should involve in their children's learning in ways that are fun and non-intimidating. Parents should always monitor their children's use of the Internet. Librarians and teachers are the most reliable resources who can serve for the child's reading needs.
