ABSTRACT

In this opening chapter, we introduce the subject matter of the book and look at the contemporary and enduring issues relating to the curriculum, pedagogy and assessment in examination and senior secondary physical education. We introduce readers to the aims and purposes of the book, and explore the terminology of examination and senior secondary physical education. Importantly we locate our work within broader policy and curriculum theory and developments. Our discussion examines curriculum policy, critical inter-relationships between curriculum, pedagogy and assessment, and the politics of knowledge within the context of physical education. The chapter introduces concerns with quality and equity that run through subsequent chapters of the book.
