ABSTRACT

In Chapter 4, we critically examine pedagogical approaches, teaching and learning contexts and activities that feature in examination and senior secondary physical education internationally and issues that have been identified as pedagogical challenges for teachers. We draw on the work of Connelly and Connelly (2013), Penney (2013b) and Tinning (2010), in examining pedagogical practices in examination and senior secondary physical education, with a particular focus on pedagogy as policy action. We draw on our data and analysis to discuss the pedagogic practices associated with three themes: assessment and examination pedagogies; textbook pedagogies; and technology and pedagogy. Finally, we critically examine findings from our own and others’ research in considering the notion of transformative pedagogies in examination and senior secondary physical education.
