In an unequal agricultural society, with primitive techniques, where men were at the mercy of nature and starved if the harvest failed; where plagues and warfare made life uncertain; it was easy to see famines and epidemics as punishments for human wickedness. As long as the level of technique was too low to liberate men from nature, so long were they prepared to accept their helplessness before a God who was as unpredictable as the weather. Sin, like poverty and social inferiority, was inherited.
