ABSTRACT
If the materials from which we constructed our buildings were not largely inert then the adverse effects of the elements would be unlimited. Buildings would be eroded by rain, blown down by wind, overloaded by snow, overheated by the sun. These phenomena do take their toll on our buildings, but in general, building engineering has reduced these risks to a minimum.
