ABSTRACT

Conceptions of solidarity are intricately connected to nationalism and national identity. Myths of economic equality and of national unity that transcends entrenched socioeconomic divisions are powerful means by which nationalism can be antithetical to social justice. Inversely, this relationship can be a progressive force, in which nationalism allied with awareness of inequality can foster a sense of solidarity and social justice. This chapter demonstrates how diverging founding myths regarding equality and solidarity remain salient in France and the U.S.
