ABSTRACT
National symbols and discourse play a key role in promoting the affective attachment and sense of belonging necessary to perpetuating the nation. This chapter demonstrates that nationalist symbols and discourse have become more prominent in French and U.S. textbooks following decades of public debate over diversity and its implications for national identity. The national values that textbooks thus promote reflect a resurgence of cultural assimilationism in France and conservatism in the U.S.
