ABSTRACT

Phil’s new orchard contains a row of trees planted two feet apart, for stooling, then other rows spaced wide enough for growth, and laid out north-south. Looking across, there are two rows of apples followed by a row of hazels and nitrogen fixers, followed by a row each of plums and pears; and then another row of hazels and nitrogen fixers and two rows of apples again. ‘This helps cross-pollination of varieties – you want to ensure that,’ says Phil.
