ABSTRACT

On September 3rd, the Cabinet decided to send out the VIth Division; it joined the Expeditionary Force on September 16th. Its constituent brigades were utilized to assist in holding the line on the Aisne established after the victory of the Marne, although it did not come into action as a division until after the transfer of the British Expeditionary Force to the north in October. Unable to break through the German entrenched line on the Aisne by frontal attack, Joffre had decided on a turning movement with the object of enveloping the western German flank. On September 24th Aston fell ill and was replaced by Paris, also of the Royal Marine Artillery. On September 30th Paris moved his headquarters from Dunkirk to Cassei while from Morbecque, eight miles south of Cassel, Samson cleared the country of German cavalry patrols.
