ABSTRACT

As the International Living Future Institute provides detailed guidelines for the application of each of the Petals, the objective of this chapter is to examine how the Living Building Challenge supports transformation to, and working within, an ecological worldview. The intention of Site Petal is to determine where people can build what type of development, and how to restore a place. Ecological and geological investigations of the site and its surrounding context can provide inspiration and engagement. The Urban Agriculture Imperative requires that projects contribute to local and regional food production. The Energy Petal is similar to the Water Petal in that it aims to use the energy budget of the site. The Materials Petal is known as posing the most onerous set of Imperatives. Green buildings have been the built environment industry's attempt to move towards a more ecologically responsible, 'sustainable' city from within the mechanistic worldview.
