ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concept covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book provides a short overview of research on all areas of early language acquisition, emphasising the multiple constraints that help a child to learn without too much prior knowledge. Latent semantic analysis is one of a number of very similar approaches. It goes by several other names: the conceptual web approach, the hyperspace analogue to language (HAL), and high-dimensional memory (HDM). Wikipedia has excellent biographies of Broca and Wernicke. For a more recent model of language processing and the brain, but one that still isn't a million miles away from the Wernicke-Geschwind model, see Ullman. Steven Pinker's The Blank Slate is an excellent overview of genetic influences on behaviour, nature versus nurture, language, and sex differences.
