ABSTRACT

The attitude expressed by Cousteau is that of a person who has found an optimal level of stimulation in his work. He is probably among a minority. One thinks of the millions of workers performing repetitious and minimal manual operations on a production line, the deadening monotony of the "paper shuffling" ofthe clerical worker, and the rows ofIBM card punchers. Whereas such jobs may be satisfactory to low-sensation seekers, one would guess that even moderate-level sensation seekers would find such work aversive. The absenteeism and alcoholism among production line workers is an index of the severity of the restriction of their operations. For these workers, their work is most definitely not "play."
