ABSTRACT
The state of Imperial Rome, in the popular imagination, is organised in triumvirate. The Ancient Greek world was based on tribes, and to unite them under Rome demanded the unique selling proposition that life was better if one joined in. Thinking about Roman culture therefore conjures up images very different from those people have of Ancient Greek life. The people are subservient to the sacred Roman eagle symbol of the greater Rome, or for that matter the sacred tribune or even the sacred shrines where the legions' eagles were stored. Rome certainly educates the people on their duties as citizens. At the hub of the system the people have what they begin to read the city as 'eternal city' in the case of Rome itself, which grew from little more than a village as a result of the expansionist mettle of its progeny.
