ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts covered in the preceding chapter of this book. The book is organised in three sections. First, the author revisits the various forms of mobility shown in the examples found in the empirical chapters and discusses the ways in which new forms of mobility generate new class effects. Second, he returns to language and highlights the argument that voice is the restratifier and that by using language, people articulate voice and recreates social layers, distinctions, and exclusions. Third, he attempt to relate the voicing effects discussed so far to the large scale restratification of Chinese society on the basis of mobility, new class formation, and voice as a new class marker. Language is at the centre of the book, and sociolinguistic changes in languages and their relative positions have been the theme of the empirical chapters. The book tells a "story" of voice, mobility, and social restratification.
