ABSTRACT

Rebecca's choice of word order places a different emphasis on her story. 'Cinderella was a princess that was running'. She presents a princess who needed to run. Her phrasing accentuates the word 'princess', suggesting an underlying premise behind the act of running, and the fact that the person doing it is royalty. Rebecca makes us believe that a princess running is out of the ordinary. This allows Rebecca to demonstrate her knowledge of story language, as she describes the event. 'She Bumped, and she Pow, and she landed, Bang'. If this sentence appeared in a children's picture book, we would readily accept that its author was an adult. The idea of a girl dancing to the music with her 'marrier' is one of the most romantic images she have ever heard. Bethany plays with grammar. Storytelling and Story Acting offers a place where she can record her tales without needing to make changes or corrections.
