ABSTRACT
Teachers' writing groups are making a difference to the teaching of writing. They provide a place where teachers write and talk together in ways that enhance their individual practice as writers and as teachers of writing. The groups that exist in the UK called the National Writing Project UK (NWP UK) have their roots in the National Writing Project USA (NWP USA) and in our personal experience of writing together over several decades. Teachers' writing groups offer the possibility of personal and professional autonomy. The writing group affords the opportunity to write in any way individuals wish, and to explore ideas, memories and ways of being that are important and authentic. Teachers' writing groups are re-claiming, re-discovering and re-defining writing. They are taking responsibility for themselves as creative and thoughtful practitioners and recognising their professional responsibility to others. Teachers regularly share work from their own classrooms and welcome each other to visit their schools.
