ABSTRACT
Teachers report that children respond very positively to writing in a different setting. A group probably needs to try out different places to discover what works for them. Teachers' experiences of writing in different spaces have prompted them to take young writers to different locations and to discover how especially liberating that can be for them. Listening to other people's writing made us think more about our own and want to go back to it, and finish it. The collection becomes the structure which underpins the composition. Another form of collecting might involve a chain of associations. Museums and galleries are filled with images and objects which can prompt personal writing or open up avenues of thought. Landscapes show at the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts (SCVA) in Norwich by creating and writing on paper landscape sculptures, some of which became the setting for film animation.
